Bora Bora Yacht Club Meets Cyclone Oli

Restaurant Flooded

Waves crashing in the restaurant

Wednesday, February 3rd 2010 cyclone Oli ravaged the island of Bora Bora. Many homes, hotels, and small business were touched by Oli.

Amongst them the Bora Bora Yacht Club, a great hang out for locals and tourists alike. Well known for its excellent food, live music and waterfront dining the Bora Bora Yacht Club was at Oli’s mercy. With waves in the pass measuring 6 meters high and winds blowing at 120 kilometers per hour with gusts up to 200 kilome

ters per hour the Bora Bora Yacht Club has seen better days. Oli ripped off most of the yacht clubs dock and decking. The small bar on the dock known as the “sushi bar” along with its fare (a palapa type roof made of pandanus) is now decorating Davy Jones’ locker. Waves came crashing into the restaurant through the bar and made its way clear to the kitchen. The next day a tropical fish was found resting on the sofa in the bar. A river of water made its way through the property all the way behind the laundry rooms flooding this as well, and over turning a giant ice machine. An unmanned boat was also found behind the laundry rooms wedged in a ditch between the Bora Bora Yacht Club and a neighbors house. Looking out into the garden could be better described as looking out into a choclate milk colored lagoon. the property was flooded with water 2 feet deep. The three overwater bungalows did not fare so well either. The first two bungalows were damaged by water and flooding. A giant sink hole now threatens the bathroom of the first bungalow. The last bungalow where owners Teiva, Jessica, & their family lived was worst hit by Oli. The whole floor of their bedroom/home caved in and washed away taking with it their bed, refridgerator and some personal belongings.

The next day was about surveying the damage and beginning the process of cleaning up and starting over. The Bora Bora Yacht Club was hit hard and yet there are still others less fortunate. Teiva and Jessica are thankful that nobody was hurt and that they have so many people in their lives who are encouraging them, lending a hand to help pick up debris or offering them a place to stay With all of this support they will no doubt rebuild the Bora Bora Yacht Club and make it better then ever.

We are thinking of you all and will be with you soon to give help and support in any way that we can. In the mean time we miss you and if there is anything that we can do please let us know.. Lots of Love to you all, Will and Jubee and Fuerte…. We cannot wait for the re-opening party…………….

  7. So sorry to hear from Will & Jubee about the damage that Oli caused. The pictures are almost unbelievable. However, as you say, at least no one was injured. Pleased to hear from Will that all the moorings held! Good luck with the rebuild – hopefully we might be able to see you later in the year in the “new” BBYC.

  8. Hi Guys, We just learned of your losses. We are at a loss for words. We will send some assistance through the relief fund right away. My moms house in florida was devasted a few years ago.
I wish you could see it now. Time will heal all.

  9. Best of luck with the reconstruction.
